1. Any man would be scared, even if not afraid to die every person has their fear of dying. He might not be scared of getting shot but being stabbed is very different. Every man has different fears, just some more than others.
2. It's not related . The Vietnam was wasn't sending kids to die for oil. Back then we actually needed a cause to have our kids slaughtered.
