1. He had no one else to write and it gave him some sence of hope.
2. They know how short most soldiers life spans are during this time.
3. I'm sure he waited a few days thinking the letter was just delayed and would come. After awile i'm sure he realised his brother wasn't coming back. Loosing a sibling/child in a close family will destroy everything in one shot. Something like that will never heal.
